Martha’s Vineyard and Falmouth, MA
FRIDAY
2 pm: A scenic ride across the bay
Leave the car and grab your bag, take the 35 minute scenic ride from Falmouth to Martha’s Vineyard aboard the Island Queen.
3 pm: Stroll among the gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs
300 plus colorful gingerbread colorful cottages line the waterfront and encompass the old Methodist Campground before checking in to the modern and eclectic Summercamp. Designed as a nod to Oak Bluffs’ history as a summer “camp” destination for the Methodist Church, Summercamp reflects the rustic, retro and nostalgic touches that all ages can embrace.
5 pm: Head to Vineyard Haven for a Black Dog Sunset
Home to the legacy, the Black Dog, named in 1967 when a black lab-boxer mix boarded Air Force Pilot, Robert Douglas’s ship. A constant fixture on the Vineyard, shop the shops, dine or grab an outdoor cocktail at the Tavern, then take a to-go picnic dinner and bottle of wine aboard The Alabama, Douglas’ 126 foot sailing vessel. Hoist the sails, man the wheel, and sip your wine and take in the unbelievable views.
9 pm: Take in a different scene at Back Door Donuts
The iconic Oak Bluffs doughnut shop that commands long lines into the night hours. Just like it’s name this local speakeasylike spot for sweet tooths opens it “back door” in the evenings and is a scene not to be missed. A must? Definitely grab a signature Apple Fritter or Buttermilk glazed donut or one of the funkier flavors like Buttercrunch, Maple Bacon, or the Party doughnut.
SATURDAY
9 am: Shop and take in the salty breeze
Wander east to Circuit Street for a coffee at Biscuits and shopping while you enjoy the salty breeze before the first ferry deboards. Open early you can find a souvenir t-shirt and be sure to take a photo in front of the ultra preppy Vineyard Vines and their pink and blue cottage store at the end of the street.
2 pm: Put Toes in the Sand at the Sea Crest Beach Resort
After you bid farewell, start your planning for a night back in Falmouth. This quaint Cape town boats one of the only beach front resorts on the cape, the Sea Crest Beach Hotel. Perfect for families and couples of all ages, relax on the beach with chaise side service and a sunset unlike any other. The Suites are a quiet retreat after a day in the water.
8 pm: A Waterfront Dinner in Quaint Woods Hole
At the extreme southwest corner of the Cape lies Woods Hole, population 718. Part of Falmouth, this adorable cedar shake few blocks boasts a premiere waterfront restaurant, the Landfall. Built of salvaged boat wood constructed from ship wrecks and decor gifted by locals in search of a summer lobster roll. Make reservations early for this not to be missed summer spot.
